Do not be the devil by seeing the devil in the person next to you, for all are in the cycle of rebirth because of the devil in them. Let us put this in another way.
Do not be driven by the personal ego (ugly self) by seeing the incompatible ego in the person next to you for all are in the cycle of rebirth because of the ego in them. Yet there is another way to rephrase this.
Do not be driven by attachment by seeing the negative clinging in the person next to you, for all are in the cycle of birth and death because of clinging or attachment.
Do not be driven by ill-will by seeing the ill-will in the person next to you for all are in the cycle of rebirth because of ignorance which gives rise to ill will, selfishness and wrong views.
Do not be driven by selfishness by finding fault with the selfishness in the person next to you. For the very selfishness, which you find unpleasant and decadent, which you find in your friend or foe to be out of place in the temple of the Lord is also what you sow.
We reap what we sow. If we plant corn, do not expect a harvest of wheat
If you pursue worldly values in the temple of the Lord, do not expect to reap a spiritual harvest of the Holy Spirit / 'Leng' * of God Almighty, the Jade Emperor
Do not cultivate ugly worldliness or ugly selfishness or dark egoism in the place of the Lord. Give only to the Lord not earth-bound attributes but divine attributes free from worldliness, ugly selfishness and free from ugly narrow-minded egoism. Give to Heaven the attributes of selflessness, humility (no-ego) and divinity by cultivating loving kindness for one and all, by having compassion, by rejoicing in others good deeds and thoughts, and by embracing the calmness and peace of the lotus (equanimity or inner peace)
Give unto Heaven what is due to Heaven, and if you can, you should give unto the world what you could offer to give to Heaven for this will bring Heaven to the world.
This is what our Lord Bo Tien expects of us. The minimum will be for us to make the wholehearted effort. We must make the start in the right direction. Dwell not on the past, ignore the 'sins' or imperfections of the past, free the mind from guilt, and move on to the present and future. Do not be bound up by guilt.
All beings are basically good, and should always try to do more good. This is essential for spiritual enlightenment. Man is not sinful through creation. It is by action and deeds that imperfections arise. The so-called wrong do not hurt God in the least but hurt the men themselves and should not be termed as sins. (In reality, there is no sin for God is above and beyond hurt.) Have no unnecessary guilt conscience, therefore, but strive to analyse oneself instead. It is important that one should analyse one’s own actions, and correct any not-so-right instead of being burdened by guilt. Only then will one be able to ascend higher spiritually.
Everyone is imperfect and will err at some time or other. If we can accept this, we should learn to tolerate, forgive and forget. Forgiveness is divine. Bearing grudge and hatred is the hallmark of the devil in us. Forgiving through loving kindness is the hallmark of the Holy Spirit, and when we adopt such attributes, we welcome the 'Leng' *or Holy Spirit of God to reside in us and guide us through His representatives via the various religions and sects (which are referred to by the Lord Saint through Four Pillar Doctrine). Each one of us can then truly bring a piece of heaven to the world.
*'Leng' is the word for Holy Spirit in Chinese Hokkien dialect
