No 975 of Living Life Series 1
Go to where there is peace and comfort. The pursuit of peace is the natural instinct of men. But it would be awful if you are addicted, develop tolerance and want more and more and if you suffer withdrawal in its absence
The so-called comforts of luxury do not provide the enduring peace and are often not enough to provide peace.
Men flock to where there is peace. That is why there are the weekend crowds of mega houses of God. Men seek comfort and joy with fellow men led by charismatic preachers.
They go to be entertained and to entertain. What they want is immediate peace and recognition. This can be addictive. They want more and more. Thus even on weekdays despite being tired, they attend classes and cell or care groups after work.
These become the outings they cherish and these have replaced the family gatherings of the extended family of the ancestors. There is the long distance call of the extended family in more subtle ways. Religion and the houses of God provide help to fulfill this need.
All of these arise because humanity cannot find fulfillment in worldly life. They need God. They need spirituality. They are not able to do so on their own. They need fellow men.
They go for more and more. Are they addicted? If there is addiction, there is emptiness and suffering as result of not going to the houses of God.
If this exists, then the very purpose of weaning men from the clinging to the worldly life by turning to spirituality in houses of God is in a way replaced by clinging to the house of God for more of the same but albeit in spiritual ways. This is not the ideal.
The ideal is to be at peace even when alone or amid the hustle and bustle and the woes of life where peace is elusive. There must be peace within and if this is cultivated correctly, the peace will make the person calm even in a storm.
But alas, many are not able to do so and even if they do not turn to the mega houses of God, they have to seek the blessings of God and saints so that as the good lord Lord Bo Tien 武天菩萨 says issues will be no issue and even for big issues they will at least be only small issues.
Fret not if you need to turn to God and saints but remember to do what you can on your own as you grow in life and in spirituality. Turn to the houses of God if necessary but know your bearings. Do not just flow downstream with the crowd but be mindful that if you want to go the mile for clear water, you have to go against the current and go upstream to the upper source for clear water. This the good lord Lord Bo Tien 武天菩萨 reminds us.
Go for calm and the best calm is to be calm despite the lack of calm around. For those who cannot do so, by all means turn to God and saints in the solitude of self or turn to fellowship of the many at the house of God.
But don't let the pursuit of calm be addictive. Then you end up with what you don't want to have - no lasting calm and the woes of withdrawal due to addiction to calm and peace.
Spiritual peace if addictive is not ideal. It is time to quit addiction of any sorts - spiritual addiction included. The proof of addiction is tolerance when you want more and more and if you suffer from withdrawal in its absence...
