No 757 of Living Life Series 1
The problems and issues of men are many and plentiful. Even if some problems cannot be resolved and may even be fated, men just move on in life as though there are no issues.
This is in a way good as then they have the fortitude to handle more of life. They look at the sunrise and not the sunset. They live life as though there is sunrise and no sunset. They live and never say die. They are blind to death and upsets. In a way, it is a choice of sorts to shield them from the dark side of life that is ever there for sure.
But the man of spirituality sees life as it is. Black is black and not white. For him, there is no need at all to white wash life with white paint.
Awareness of the darkness or unpleasantness of life serves as the awakening for men to treasure even more the fortunes of life and yet face the reality of their transiency.
This is easier said than done and often religions have to go for lower level of spirituality for men. They assure that God provides and all will be well and good.
Unpleasant events are ways God strengthens our resilience and prepares us for more of life.
But the man of higher spirituality looks at the unpleasantness in the eye and never flinch. He finds even more meaning in life and this sense of realization of the nature of life sinks into his spirit.
He values life even more and curbs his dependence on good events to uplift his spirit. He cultivates the inner peace that is there and does not depend on good events to give him the pep or stimuli for more joy and peace.
He has joy and peace to begin with and the joy and peace will hold even in the midst of unpleasantness. There is no need for any curtain of deception that all is right and that God provides.
He is at peace with life and knows better the God that others talk about and holds on to but are further though seemingly nearer to God than him.
Lord Bo Tien (武天菩萨) did echo that the near may be far and the far near, didn't he? The man of higher insight and spirituality finds no need to be in a temple. This is ever so true.
That man does not turn a blind eye to sunset or need the curtain of religion to shield him from the sunsets of life. He is wide awake to life as it is and as it unfurls.
So which do we choose to be. Do we want to be man of higher spirituality or be a man of common religion and just believe that God provides?
The crux of the matter is whether we want to be of higher spirituality of the distinctive few or be content with the common spirituality of the masses.
Some put it as whether we want to be like the sages or be just common men of religion. Of course, this is just a matter of choice. But let not this be a bone of contention for men to argue till the sun rises from the west.
