No 722 of Living Life Series 1
Why is it that men only want to go to heaven and not only that, they think that the easy way to go there is to believe in a saint and by the grace or vast merits of the saint, be able to be there in the after life. Men are not happy that life as man is not eternal and they do think that by being in heaven, they can have eternity. To them this is fact and common sense.
But is this for real and if for real, then why not God and saint grant eternity of life for men in their lives as men? If this cannot be done and not at all logical, then why men deem it sensible that God and saints can grant eternal life after death and some even go to the extent that there is either eternity in heaven or in hell?
Why is there the paradox or contradiction? Let us not go for the contradiction but for the reality.
The sages of old did differ in thinking and they were the few who could see through that there is no eternity in heaven or in hell as the many and various levels of heaven and hell are additional realms or dimensions for beings to be reborn into.
Knowing this is the case, the sages advised men to open their mind to be aware that the solution is to stop the cause that leads to rebirths.
The cause is ignorance or wrong views or beliefs that promote clinging for all that are caused, created and conditioned.
We simply have to live life without going for life that is caused, created and conditioned. This does not mean ending life or giving up life. We cannot give up life thinking that there is no life if we do not go for the caused, created and conditioned.
Life that is caused created and conditioned will not be for eternity. Go then for the life that is not caused, created and conditioned and such a life is the real life that gives true inner peace.
It can be tasted even in the world of the caused, created and conditioned. We do not wait till the next life to taste the peace of life that comes from having life that has less to do with the caused created and conditioned. We should not procrastinate for that will be waiting till the cows come home or worst still for the sun to rise from the west
We can of course do so now at our own pace, slowly, steadily and incrementally. Why bother with all the talk of paradise or heaven in afterlife when we can live and walk the path of the saints in the present life?
In time, but no need to fret when this will be, we will be free from life of caused, created and conditioned and be like Gautama Buddha.
Do not daydream of eternity but live in the real life here and now if we do not want to be entangled in paradox and self-deception. Don't heckle or bargain for the life here after but for the life here and now that is of peace of the moment and for more moments to come.
Also it is better to be a bit of the saint than just to adore the saint. Gautama would rather we be like him than adore him. Adoring him and not living up to his teachings would be a contradiction isn't it? Go for the reality - the truth of life and live up to the truth - the doctrine. Be a Buddha and not idolize or be crazy over the Buddha.
No wonder the good lord Lord Bo Tien (武天菩萨) says that what we see in his image should not be who he is but what it represents - the doctrine or Word. "My image is the doctrine. The doctrine is in my image. He who sees and knows the Doctrine sees and knows me."
There is the sense of purpose - that sense of mission. The mission is to save souls through teaching all to live in doctrine. This can only be achieved by minimizing contradictions - no idolizing please when what is needed is to live in doctrine which cannot be by idolizing the lord, his image or the man at the helm at any of his temples.
In short, go straight to doctrine as basis of life. Doing anything else other than this will be contradictions to the mission in life - the reality of the need to live up to the Doctrine or Word of God. This is the basis of all religions and is in life.
Go not for the contradictions but for the reality. But this is easier said than done. As in many aspects of life, contradictions and at times double talking are rife. We have to live with contradictions, might as well accept them and manage them. This may be the way for many as only a few can be live like sages and recluse.
