No 690 of Living Life Series 1
If men live but must still die, then there must be reason why this must be so. Life is impermanent and where there is beginning, then there must be the end. But the end is the beginning and the beginning the end. In the perpetual cycle, man is lost in the cycle of clinging and rebirth.
The man who wants peace may come to terms with every beginning and every end. He must not just look at sunrise but he must appreciate too the sunset. There is beauty in death as in sunset. The ugliness of death is not so to the one who is at peace and he finds life's meaning in death.
That is exactly why the duo Dua Di Ya Pek (大二爷伯) have immortalized their appearances at death as the images for men to remember them by. One was hanged so that as a court guard, he would no longer be instrumental to cause others to suffer and die through opium during the latter days of Manchu rule in China. The other too followed suit for same reason but he was drowned. So one looks pale and white with tongue protruding due to hanging and the other black and congested in the face due to drowning.

Do the men who regard them as deities find their appearances so distasteful. Far from it, they find it inspiring for they see through the rather gross appearances, the beauty of their hearts to help men. They have loving kindness for one and all.
Additionally for the more learned, the mindfulness of death as it unfurls in life, be it at end of human life as man or for that matter the passing of every moment of life, goes a long way to cultivate equanimity or inner peace comes what may - a peace that is unshakable even by death or the passing away of things that arise. This mindfulness of death is essential to every serious follower of the blessed one - the Buddha
The spiritual wayfarer is unfazed by death and is at peace. If death cannot upset his peace, what can? This peace is what man of any religion must hope and want to have.
Peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm at heart. It would be a victory and awesome if one can be at peace with death long before it happens. This is the peace that all religions talk about.
There is that oneness of peace found in all religions and this oneness is the central message referred to as The God Knowledge by Lord Bo Tien (武天菩萨) in 1969.
