What is peace? Peace is not about being in a place where there is no noise, problem or tough life. Peace is about being in the midst of all these things and still be calm in your heart.
This is Upekkha or Equanimity. There is true victory and joy in peace. It is about having peace of heart even in the storms of life.
Living up to Upekkha or Equanimity is uphill task more so when one badly needs to be at peace in spirit because of the outpouring of concerns by many. They end up creating an additional storm around the poor soul of a man, already mired up in his storm.
This is the problem more so when one faces a great milestone life event. This is due to the lack of the peace in those who are much concerned for the person's peace of mind.
People who want to show concern and give support may often end up causing and promoting the opposite of equanimity. Equanimity is best defined as having the peace and going about life positively amid the often lack of peace - the conflicts, emotional turmoil and unrest that hover around.
Often religious people are the ones who tries to give solace and peace but end up becoming overbearing and dominating. They become additional source of stress to the one they tries to help. They end up disturbing whatever the remnant peace that is still there,
Thus those who try to minister to the social, emotional and physical needs of the affected one should be up to the mark. They must be at peace so that they can exude the infectious peace to create the correct positive ambiance for the affected one to garner the peace in his spirit.
Religiosity or rather the call to convert say the dying or the one facing calamities of sorts (e.g. broken heart, failures in life) is often the culprit. It is actually the bad or evil one that rears it ugly head through those who come as angels.
But unfortunately despite the good intent, they lack insight and know-how to have the peace themselves and to come to the suffering one in peace. They have the heart, the goodwill but not the capability and insight.
Instead of infectious peace, they end up infecting the suffering one and his family with emotional unrest. Worse still, the good Samaritans (who are effectively not) may even come to proclaim salvation if the suffering one is prepared to do so.
This can inadvertently cause distress and harassment which in the weakened and distraught state, the suffering one may just have to give in just to have less stress and hopefully have some semblance of peace.
Actually by giving in, the suffering one is actually promoting the satisfaction and peace in the very ones who are supposed to help him have peace.
Peace is no easy task for the one who badly needs peace. So if we want to help someone, please keep the peace in ourselves and if we are ourselves unable to have peace, just give some social and morale support and listening ears. This will often suffice.
Do keep some distance so as to not to infect him with our own lack of peace. There is need to have buffer - to leave some sort of protected private space for the individual who is suffering. If possible pray in quiet for him but do not pray in front of him and around him - effectively surrounding and intimidating him.
That may be too intrusive and he may not be attuned and receptive. He may actually easily pick the bad vibes in us, considering the problem he is in. He may just succumb and give in - just to have less stress.
Even God and saints seem to keep the silence but provide the divine hand to the suffering ones. Lord Bo Tien reminds us that the one who needs help will receive help if he prays in earnest to God and saints. This is a universal truth regardless of religion or even if one has no religion.

No God or saint will deny help to the one in tears just because he is not a believer or worshiper. No human philanthropist will deny help to one in need just because that man is not in his circle or acquainted with him.
They that sow in tears shall reap tears of joy. This is often the biblical type of reassurance. Is there the need to call out to God or to proclaim that they belong and worship him as pre-condition?
Common sense dictates that God is not like some men who are like that - one kind so to speak in the language of the backstreet. God bless all even those who do not know what they do.
That is the God we know and we all know that for sure. Likewise, we too should know all heavenly saints and buddhas in the same light. They are not men and are far better than some myopic men who know not what they do.
Give them time and they will learn the same truth behind all. This is the same truth behind and common to all - The Inner Truth, no less and for which Lord Bo Tien descended as the messenger in 1969 in Singapore.
Religions will help all men, animals and beings across religious divides. That is why charities of a particular religion is for all without exceptions - regardless of creed color or faiths.

Peace is when there is apt rapport of yin and yang in life and in mind of individual, when yin and yang move as one. For more, read other posts on yin and yang. |
