No 1417 of Living Life Series 1
Do not be self-righteous and think we are right and others wrong. In the extreme case, we will end up only wanting to hear ourselves and not hear others.
We will run down others for whatever they say or do. We will not get along with others. We will end up paranoid and isolated.
We will be in cocoon of our own making and think that our religious beliefs are right no matter how and no matter what happens. We will end up as self-righteous fools.
Do not be self righteous and bring down the roof for ourselves and for others. Understand and empathise with others even if you have different viewpoints and want to do things differently.
Bo Tien 武 天 says that we can learn from one another's life, good points and wrong points. If some disagree with even what God or a saint said, it is not that they do not believe in God and saint but that they have doubts.
Bo Tien 武天 says that any such doubts arise because they do not understand.
A not rare scenario is when they may even feel threatened and unsettled that they may actually know little when they think the world about themselves. They think that they know best and will not listen. They want to be in their own comfort zone or enclave.
Worse still, they may insist that we follow them and that we give up what we think and practise and do what they do. When they end up in the controlling majority say in a temple, there will be problems. This is also why there too can be problems in society when such people are in sizable numbers.
It is all because of self-righteousness. Such people appear confident and unyielding but actually they have doubts and feel threatened. They push away their doubts and fight claw and nails to insist they are right.
They may even claim a temple or a social institution for themselves and reject those whom they feel a threat to them. When they do reach this stage, they insulate themselves from others by getting rid off others as members though manipulative ways. They make use of the constitution of the temple or institution often without informing these others that they are no longer members on record.
They only want to hear themselves and not others so as not to feel threatened. They shut themselves away from all other views and others with with such views.
Of course, the best way is to disown others as bonafide members of the temple or social organisation and to dilute the numbers of these others by bringing in more of their own kind. The irony is that these others may include founder members who inducted them into the temple or institution in the very first place.
In such an eventuality, we must be patient and give them space and time to learn in their own way. When they do learn, they will come round and be one with us. This is the advice of Bo Tien 武 天.
The problem of self-righteousness is highlighted by all religions and by society. We can say it is one of the aspects of the truth in life and in religions - the Inner Truth.
