Go for the forest and not the individual trees. For the tree, see the tree as a whole and not the leaves and twigs. Always have an overview and not be myopic. In modern life, we refer to the need for helicopter vision and that we have macroscopic approach and not go for micro approach.
In the words of Lord Bo Tien, we should go for the basic principles or truth underlining life and this means that we go for the underlying same truth or principles behind religions. The truth is the truth of Divinity or God, call it what we may.

If we do not do so, but go for the trees and twigs, we will find religions often very conflicting and even divisive. But if we go for the big picture or the forest, we will realise that all belong to the same forest or that one Divinity and the purpose is how to reconcile with Divinity and be divine ourselves.
We need to be like God and saints. The way to do so is to understand life as having polar opposites, the passive and active, the male and female, the odds and evens, the yin and yang.
We know we need to handle the polarities, the yin and yang, to be atop and balance them so that we be at peace though we are part of nature or life and we too have yin and yang.
This way to do so is referred to as The Way or Tao. It is inherent in all religions or sects though not referred to as Tao. It is depicted by the image of Lord Bo Tien with feet atop the elements.
Lord Bo Tien |
Then we will have peace and this must be cultivated over time. Then we experience semblance of the peace of God and saints. When we reach the zenith of peace within us, we are one with God and saints. We are one with Divinity.
Religions are like the different trees of the forest. They may be different but they attract men but once in the forest, men must be able to conceptualise the whole forest to get overview. Men of religions must be able to know how to see the big picture of Divinity and not the small picture of men and their religions.
It is just like in the fable of the blind men and the elephant. We are like the blind men in the fable. Men of various religions and sects can argue till kingdom come that their religion or sect is the correct one and others wrong. This is sad and pathetic.
It is also said by the lord saint that religions and sects are like the various tributaries and down stream segments of a river. All originate from the upper source at the top of the mountain. To get clear water, Lord Bo Tien said we must go to the upper source. But before we can go to upper source, we must find our way to the river, its tributaries or downstream segments.
